Commanded and Connected
鈥淎nd God spoke to Moses, saying: 鈥楥ommand your brother and his sons regarding the Torah of the offerings.鈥 (Leviticus 6:1-2)
Mitzvah is one of the foundational words of Jewish life. Its root comes from the verb which is the name of this week鈥檚 parasha: Tzav, 鈥渃ommand.鈥 Despite its colloquial usage as 鈥済ood deed,鈥 mitzvah really means 鈥渃ommandment鈥濃攁 holy edict, meant to give shape and substance to what it means to live as a member of the Jewish covenant.
